- March, 2010: Windows 7 proves to be much more stable than Vista,
or even WinXP. Still the same issues that users need to keep
their systems up-to-date. Added link to Secunia to
recommendations, as well as a 2nd tool for identifying and removing
malware. Recent postings moved me to put up a new What's Your
Issue column that cuts to the chase about what to do for computer
security. I am really liking the new crop of wireless optical
mice that have a very small USB dongle - perfect for notebooks
'cause you can leave them in all the time. Some of the
Logitech one's even have a handy stick-on connector that your mouse
can slide on for storage on the top of your notebook PC.
- Feb. 2010: Apple announces the iPad - but it doesn't have a
camera (or better yet, two, one facing you and one facing away).
Still no flash support but that's not overly troubling. But
without the camera, it loses a lot of its appeal, I may wait for the
next version. Cryptic releases Star Trek Online, an MMORPG
that finally offers long-time Trekkies and Trekkers the chance to
live out their dreams of exploring the galaxy in a starship.
The Washington DC metro area gets the biggest snowfall ever
recorded.
- Jan. 2010: Testing out all-in-one Acer with touch-screen,
finding the touch-screen is marginally useful, more for show than
real use. The finger isn't accurate enough to use it with
programs like Outlook or even web browsing.
- Dec. 2009: after 50+ Win7 upgrades and new system setups, I find
the process easier and less subject to big problems, but not
completely trouble-free. There are still some gotchas, as some
clients have tried a do-it-yourself upgrade and got into trouble.
- Oct. 20th, 2009: Getting near launch, making some layout
changes and minor cosmetic changes, plus a whole lotta quality
control check. Now we need to compare old website to new and
make sure we didn't miss something important! when we go live,
we'll clear out this pre-launch blog and start our real blog - about
issues near and dear to us, such as all things technology, the
environment, green technology, global warming, education of our
youth, imparting good ethics principles on our kids, etc.
- Oct. 16th, 2009: As we prepare for the launch of our new
website design, we are pondering exactly what to jettison from the
old website, and what to keep. We want to keep things simple,
and make it easy for netizens to find the information they need, so
the home page and the scrollbox will be the primary place to put the
most important information. I think we'll add a poll so that folks
can vote. The primary design elements will be:
- Four primary pages (Home, About Us, Contact Us, and Blog).
These will be accessible from any page using either the top
horizontal menu or the bottom horizontal menu
- Additional specific content pages (Security Checklist,
Recommendations, & Fix-it Toolbox). These will be accessible
from any page using the menu under Items of Interest on the
right.
- What's your Issue? A changing issue page that's at the
bottom of the Items of Interest menu (but still above the
scrolling news). This page will be a short treatise on a
hot item (first one up is the move to Windows 7). On that
page there will be a link to an archive page with the previous
"What's Your Issue?" papers.
- Each page will have the Items of interest menu plus the
scrolling text underneath. That scrolling area will have
any current nuggets of information about any technology aspect -
short and sweet stuff (anything bigger goes on the blog or as a
What's your issue).
- The home page's large content area will have a short bit at
the top that doesn't change (welcome, etc.), followed by
constantly changing "hot news" of the day/week/month - gleaned
from various sources and publications.
- We'll try to include images of products or vendors we have
reviewed (and recommend!), and may include a few other widgets
or objects here and there, not continually, but whenever the
need arises:
- MicroPolls
- Event promotion
- Countdowns
- Whatever else we find of interest
