Fix your PC

Fix your PC

If you are reading this, likely your computer is having problems. This can be an exceedingly complicated thing to deal with, so please practice patience! The first thing you need to do is assess your situation and inventory your options. You need to be able to describe your situation in relatively specific, computer terms. For example, "It won't print" may be better stated as " you can't print from certain programs, while others print ok (and have the list of which one's do and which one's don't).

As for your options, consider your sources of help. Your computer manufacturer is a good first step, as well as any software vendors (if your issue is limited to one specific program). For internet access and networking, you may be dealing with a hardware or service provider issue, and the hardware manufacturer or service provider may be of some help. A tech savvy friend or relative can help.

If all else fails, you can consider a professional service technician, but beware - the cost of fixing a broken PC can quickly add up to more than the cost of replacing the CPU (you can generally use a computer monitor for many years). And we recommend against upgrading an older PC - in almost all cases it's less expensive to simply buy a new CPU. Businesses routinely calculate the total cost of ownership for a PC to be up to 10 times the initial purchase price, but it's likely your pockets aren't that deep. And before you throw up your hands and break out the sledgehammer (or a stiff drink!), take a little time to research your problem on the internet. Often, we do a google search on the symptoms of PC problems, error message text, and anything else that pertains. We're happy to report that many problems you're likely to experience have been dealt with by others, and many folks are nice enough to post the fix online somewhere.
